Barrow Tarot, an original artwork by Katie Anderson
Barrow Tarot is a creative tool to help guide conversations and discussions about a future Barrow-in-Furness.
Created by Extreme Views Artist in Residence Katie Anderson, this deck was designed as an online reference point and resource during the 2020 Coronavirus outbreak, and became a physical artwork for Art Gene's "No More Hot Air" Exhibition in March 2022. The cards are designed to be a playful reference, drawing inspiration from the everyday, the familiar, the hidden, the iconic and the forgotten in and around the town of Barrow, as experienced by a newcomer to the town.
Barrow Tarot features a sleek black rose gold embossed box, accompanied by a series of 77 individually illustrated characters held within thick blue felt with an instruction manual. The artwork is one of only 100 unique artist multiples available to purchase.
Dimensions L: 170mm, W: 125mm, D: 38mm
How to play
The deck is divided into four "houses' : Community, Environment, Industry and Culture, each comprised of 14 cards, made up of number and face cards, and 21 characters, familiar to those acquainted with traditional tarot. There is no set way to deal the cards, but you may like to begin a conversation with a friend, colleague or acquaintance by selecting a card and asking "What might a future Barrow-in-Furness look like?"
You could then deal a selection of cards to explore the deck.
